The Animal Zone at South Staffordshire College’s Rodbaston Campus is home to around 750 animals from meerkats to monkeys, rabbits to alpacas, and in Spring hosts a special event: Meet the Spring Lambs!
We have had a super morning at the lambing event today. We arrived early and parked with ease on the large car park. We were greeted with a smile and shown through to where the action happens. There is a tea room and a shop of cute delights as you enter so we had to coax the little lady out with the promise of a return.
A number of attractive birds greet you as you wonder though to the lambing barn, which is easily accessible and pushchair friendly. The bleating from the lambs can be heard from afar so the little lady was immediately intrigued. She was keen to get into her protective gear and take up her position on the bales of hay that create a theatre for the fun. Hygiene is a priority so you’re guided to sanitise your hands before you enter and after the experience to make sure you and the little lambs are protected. There is guidance that pregnant women are encouraged not to take part for their own safety.
The barn soon filled up but, as the sessions occur at intervals, there is plenty of room for everyone to have a go. We were issued with our bottle ready for our lamby friends to come out and then we were set. There was a gush of ‘Arrrghs’ and the fun began. There are plenty of lambs for every one to have a go at feeding theses cuties; some are smaller than others but all are keen to get a good feed.
After the feeding fun was over, we took a wander around the other intriguing animals that the centre houses. From Kune Kune pigs and Alpacas to Gekos and Yellow Bellied Toads, there’s plenty to see. A Reptile House is under construction and will open in the near future but a sneak peek preview is available where Leaf Cutter Ants march away. This fab place also offers birthday and educational events. There are some super new arrivals to see which generously performed some of their gymnastics as we gawped into their homes. The meerkats were friendly and popped out to see us. Who knew that Staffordshire housed an array of wonderful creatures?
The lambing event takes place on 21st – 22nd and 27th – 28th March 2015 with a number of bookable slots at 10.30, 11.30, 12.30, 2.00, 3.00 & 4.00pm so don’t miss out.
